STANDSTILL agencies want to be SaaS companies
STANDOUT agencies want to be agencies
STANDSTILL agencies want to be something they’re not. They want to be a company that sells products not services. They think this is an easier business model. They see SaaS software as a route to doing this and use their skills to develop their own apps.
They may sell a few licenses to other companies. At first they think the dream is on. A transformation will take place and the ugly agency caterpillar will turn into a beautiful SaaS butterfly.
Many try this route. But the vast majority find it an expensive and time consuming distraction.
STANDOUT agencies want to be a beautiful agency not a SaaS unicorn. They understand that SaaS, and product businesses in general, are a completely different business model and approach. Trying to get them to co-exist in one agency is a recipe for disaster.
If you simply must scratch a software itch. Build a tool that helps you run your agency better. At least then you will reap the rewards of your investment.
If you want to try and sell the software outside of your firm then I recommend you spin it off into a different company. Keep it separate and operate the two companies differently. There are many reasons for doing this, but the overriding one is that they need to be different, because they fundamentally are different.
