STANDOUT agencies ask why?
I’ve been watching SAS Rogue Heroes on BBC1.
In one episode Captain Paddy Mayne is training French commandos. He tells them to not just follow his orders, but to question him and ask “why?” The French are taken aback. “We follow orders without question” comes the response.
Captain Mayne tells them that is not the SAS way. He explains that if they don’t understand WHY they’re doing something, then when things go wrong, they won’t be able to find a different way to achieve the same objective. They might not even know what the end goal even was.
The difference between management and leadership…
– Managers talk about “how”.
– Leaders talk about “why”.
