2nd in my list of the 6 core roles of an agency owner is: The Producer (Doing the work)
So what are the STANDSTILL pitfalls that get people stuck here?
A familiar story for many a STANDSTILL agency owner is that they can’t grow their business because they’re trapped doing the actual work. It’s often a battle for smaller agency owners to break out of this cycle. They frequently blame other people for their predicament.
However challenging it might seem, to grow your agency you simply must stop being a producer of the work. Do this at your earliest opportunity. If you’re finding it difficult, ask yourself whether the cause of your frustration is not others, but yourself.
For some, the gravitational pull of doing the work is a cocktail of some powerful emotions:
– Enjoyment – they like doing the work(!)
– Fear – they’re concerned that their skills will deteriorate if they stop delivering.
– Avoidance – they’re in their comfort zone and don’t have the mindset to push out and tackle other roles. They come up with excuses to stay in delivery (eg “nobody else can do it as well as me”).
If you want to grow your agency, you must come out of delivery as soon as possible, but a final word of caution; you must also remember quality control.
Poor delegation is one pitfall, poor results/quality leading to reduced client satisfaction is quite another.
